Southern Specialties has completed its facility expansion project at its headquarters in Pompano Beach, FL. The company now operates out of approximately 100,000 square feet of warehouse space with expanded office and meeting areas. Gary James, chief operating officer of Southern Specialties, said that the facility has 10 temperature- and humidity-controlled coolers designed to optimize storage conditions for a variety of products. Three computer- controlled ripening rooms have also been added. All staging areas and loading docks are refrigerated, and new energy-efficient lighting has been installed. "We have the ability to receive any product in-house and handle it optimally, including hydrocooling, forced-air cooling or ripening product in our controlled atmosphere rooms prior to storing at ideal temperatures," said Mr. James. "We have also opened six new loading docks and added a lounge for our customers' truck drivers. Our ultimate goal is to continue to bring the most value to our customers." Mr. James added that cross-dock and consolidation services are also currently available to customers. "We also recently installed a 1200 kW generator to provide electricity for the facility in the event of a power outage," said Mr. James. Third-party warehouse service provider Unique Cold Storage also operates out of Southern Specialties' Pompano facility. Besides Pompano Beach, Southern Specialties distributes its products from its cold storage facilities in McAllen, TX, and Los Angeles.
